So, you’d like to find a home for your book!

First, congratulations! Writing a book is a major accomplishment, and you should be proud. We hope you’re taking a moment to celebrate because you’ve earned it.

Now you may be wondering: What comes next?

There are several paths to getting your book into the hands of readers. Some authors choose to self-publish, keeping full creative and financial control. Others explore hybrid publishing, which combines professional services with some author investment. But this article focuses on traditional publishing, specifically submitting your manuscript to a publisher without a literary agent.

In the traditional model, literary agents help polish your manuscript, craft your pitch, and submit your work to editors at publishing houses. They often have relationships with major publishers and act as your advocate during contract negotiations. Agents usually receive a percentage of your earnings in exchange for this support.

However, there’s another route. Many small to mid-sized publishers accept what are called unsolicited manuscripts. These are submissions made directly by the author, without an agent involved. This article is here to help you navigate that process and introduce you to publishers who are open to discovering new voices.

What is an unsolicited manuscript?

An unsolicited manuscript is one that a publisher did not specifically ask for and is submitted without a literary agent. In this case, you are representing yourself and submitting your work directly.

These types of submissions are often placed in what’s known as the “slush pile,” a queue of manuscripts waiting to be reviewed. While these may not receive immediate attention like agented submissions, they are still read and considered. Some publishers accept unsolicited manuscripts year-round, while others have open submission periods.

Always read each publisher’s submission guidelines carefully. These will typically include what genres they’re seeking, formatting instructions, and how long it may take to hear back. Following the guidelines closely increases your chances of being noticed.

Why submit unsolicited instead of working with an agent?

Securing a literary agent can be a time-consuming process. Agents receive a high volume of queries and are selective in choosing clients. Even once you find an agent, it may take months before your manuscript is submitted to publishers.

Submitting unsolicited gives you the ability to take action now. You decide where your book is sent and how often. In some cases, this can lead to a faster response. For many new authors, this route can feel more accessible and empowering, especially when targeting independent or niche publishers.

While having an agent offers certain advantages, submitting directly puts you in control of your publishing journey.

There is no single correct way to publish a book. The unsolicited route is one of several valid and empowering options. We’re here to support you by providing a carefully researched list of publishers currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts.

This list will be updated frequently, so be sure to subscribe to stay informed as new publishers are added.

Please note: We are not affiliated with any of the publishers listed, and we do not receive compensation from them. Our only goal is to provide you with accurate and useful information as you move forward.

You’ve written the book. Now let’s help you find it a home.

WAIT! Want to stay organized while submitting your book?

We created a free, customizable Manuscript Submission Tracker to help you keep track of where you’ve submitted, response times, follow-ups, and more. It’s perfect for staying on top of your publishing journey, especially if you’re submitting to multiple publishers.
